GSSE Exam

GSSE Exam | Everything You Need to Know

The GSSE exam — the General Surgical Sciences Examination — is a compulsory milestone for every doctor entering surgical training in Australia and New Zealand through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). This page covers everything you need to know about the GSSE exam: what it tests, how it works, and how to prepare effectively.

What is the GSSE Exam?

The GSSE exam assesses foundational knowledge in the three core surgical sciences: anatomy, physiology, and pathology. It is administered by RACS and must be passed by candidates across all nine surgical specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology, ENT, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, and paediatric surgery.

The GSSE is a prerequisite for progressing through the RACS surgical training program. Most candidates sit the exam as junior doctors or early surgical trainees, while working full-time in clinical roles.

GSSE Exam Format

The GSSE exam consists of two multiple choice question (MCQ) papers delivered online over two consecutive days. Each paper runs for 150 minutes with no reading time and no negative marking. This means you should answer every question — there is no penalty for guessing.

The three subject areas and their approximate weightings are:

  • Anatomy — approximately 50% of the exam, including a 20-question anatomy spot test with image-based questions
  • Physiology — approximately 25% of the exam
  • Pathology — approximately 25% of the exam

How to Pass the GSSE Exam

To pass the GSSE exam, candidates must achieve above the minimum standard in each individual section — anatomy, physiology, and pathology — as well as above the overall threshold. The pass mark varies by year but is typically around 60–65% per section. Importantly, you cannot compensate for a poor result in one section by excelling in another — all three must be passed independently.

The most effective preparation strategy combines systematic syllabus coverage with regular MCQ practice. Candidates who begin question bank practice early in their preparation — rather than only in the final weeks — consistently perform better. Tracking performance by topic allows you to direct your study time to where it matters most.

When is the GSSE Exam?

The GSSE exam is offered multiple times per year. Exam dates are published on the RACS website. Most candidates allow three to six months of structured preparation before sitting.
